Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09

Kochi by playing host to the Volvo Ocean Race 2008 has joined the celebrity league of a selected few countries. The Volvo race is the world’s most prestigious offshore around the world yacht race, and is touted as the most challenging team-sporting event in the genre of ocean race and Kochi is the only port of call in India, making it all the more special to this city.

The eight international teams taking part in the race will reach Kochi in December 2008 from Cape Town and will stay be here from December 3 to 13, before starting leg three to Sentosa Island in Singapore.

A race village spread over 2.5 acres will be set up near the BTP berth at Willingdon Island. Cochin Port Trust plays host to the esteemed India Stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race.

A big cultural extravaganza, which highlights both the traditional and contemporary culture and art forms of Kerala has been planned. Events include a colourful pageant with scintillating fireworks, musical medley of percussion instruments and an impressive line up of elephants. A mini ‘thrissur pooram’ complete with the exchange of colourful parasols will extend a hearty welcome to the race teams. The highlight of the welcome ceremony, ‘Keraleeyam’, would be a variety entertainment show performed by 45 traditional artists.

If you still didnt get how big of a deal this is, then imagine it as India hosting a F1 race.I'll update this with photos from the race village later in the week.
