My TV Guide

Sunday, December 28, 2008 Posted by j0e

A while ago my friend, Dibu, posted the TV shows which he watches. Here is my list:

24 is presented in real time, with each season depicting a 24-hour period in the life of Jack Bauer, who works with the U.S. government as it fights domestic threats. Bauer is often in the field for the Los Angeles Counter Terrorist Unit as they try to safeguard the nation from terrorist threats. The show also follows the actions of other CTU agents, government officials and terrorists associated with the plot.
Bottomline : Intense and action packed. Leading actor Kiefer Sutherland won a Golden Globe for his role in the first 10 episodes and turned Jack Bauer into a cult figure.
Current Season :7
Link : FOX

Boston Legal
This is legal drama-comedy and a spin-off of the 8 seasons series The Practice. This series is all about the attorneys working at the law firm of Crane, Poole & Schmidt. James Spader as Alan Shore is absolutely brilliant.
Bottomline : Currently in its fifth season this series is slowly loosing its charm, maybe because of many senior actors and lack of any eye candy in the main cast, not to mention the ridiculous cases the firm gets to defend. The best episode to me is 'Season2 Episode 2 - Schadenfreude'. So if you haven't started watching it, i wouldn't recommend it.
Current Season : 5
Link : ABC

Burn Notice
Michael Westen is a covert operative who has been burned (identified as an unreliable or dangerous agent) who now finds himself in his hometown of Miami, unable to leave. With his assets frozen, Michael is forced to live off his wits and any small investigative jobs he can find while he pursues the reason and person or persons who burned him. He is helped by his ex-girlfriend, Fiona and another former operative, Sam.
Bottomline : If you like spy action movies, you will like this one too. You can't help notice how the resourceful Micheal defuses the situation. The main plot is going at a very slow pace with Micheal's investigation meeting one dead end after another, but the side stories provide enough entertainment.
Current Season : 2
Link : USA Network

The series revolves around David Duchovny as Hank Moody, a charming writer and novelist plagued with personal demons. He blames his years-long case of writer's block on a variety of reasons, ranging from the hedonism of Los Angeles, to his on-again, off-again relationship with his girlfriend Karen. Hank constantly deals with the fallout of his drug and sex addictions, while trying to show his family that he can be a good, caring person.
Bottomline : There is David Duchovny and lots of hot women. Need no more reason than that. Also David Duchovny won the Golden Globe for his performance while the show got nominated.
Current Season : 2
Link : Showtime

Entourage revolves around Vincent Chase, a young, up-and-coming actor who eventually becomes an A-list star. His experiences are loosely based on those of Mark Wahlberg, who is also executive producer on the show. Other characters include his best friend Eric 'E' Murphy, older his brother Johnny "Drama" Chase, Sal "Turtle" who is another of Vince's old friends from childhood and the lovable filthy-mouthed Ari Gold, his manager.
Bottomline : This multi-award winning show is my favorite and Jeremy Piven as Ari Gold is hilarious. Definitely one to add to your list.
Current Season : 5
Link : HBO

Everybody Loves Raymond
The show revolves around the life of Italian-American Ray Barone, newspaper sportswriter from Long Island. Very flippant, Ray doesn't take many things seriously, making corny jokes in nearly every situation, no matter how troubling or problematic. Ray lives with his wife, Debra Barone, their daughter, Ally, and their identical twin sons, Michael and Geoffrey. Ray's parents and brother Robert, who live across the street, frequently make their presence known to the frustration of Ray and Debra.
Bottomline : The funniest family sitcom ever. I just watched till season 4 and waiting to get the rest. Beware, you might find a lot of similarities to your dysfunctional family.
Current Season :9 Show ended
Link : CBS

Grey's Anatomy
Grey’s Anatomy is a medical drama and revolves around Dr. Meredith Grey who began the show as a surgical intern at Seattle Grace Hospitall in Seattle, Washington. The characters of the series include a group of surgical interns and the various physicians who serve as mentors to the interns in their professional and personal lives.
Bottomline : Lots of good looking doctors which makes this very unbelievable. But as a storyline with many twist and turns in relationship between the characters. A series for girls actually, i still don't know what i like about it.
Current Season : 5
Link : ABC

Heroes is an science fiction drama series. The series tells the stories of ordinary individuals from around the world who develop superhuman abilities, and their roles in preventing disasters. The series was nominated in eight categories at the 2007 Primetime Emmy awards, including Outstanding Drama Series, and was also nominated for Best Television Series-Drama at the 2007 Golden Globes.
Bottomline : For the Comic Book fan. This has lots of resemblance to the X-Men comics where mutants have different powers. It drags a bit in season 3 but is totally unpredictable.
Current Season : 3
Link : NBC

House M.D.
Gregory House M.D., is an antisocial medical genius who heads a team of diagnosticians at the Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital in New Jersey. House's world-renowned department typically only sees patients who have failed to receive a correct diagnosis, making the patient cases complex. Furthermore, House resists cases that he does not find interesting.
Bottomline : This is a great character played brilliantly by Hugh Laurie. He's the type of guy you want curing you. He will call you an idiot to your face and you'll love him for it. Definitely should be on your list.
Current Season : 5
Link : FOX

How I Met Your Mother
In this show the main character, Ted Mosby, in the year 2030 recounts to his son and daughter the events that led to his meeting their mother. The other main characters are Marshall Eriksen, Robin Scherbatsky, Barney Stinson, and Lily Aldrin.
Bottomline : I started watching this after i finished with F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Certain episodes are really funny while the others seem like they are trying too hard. But i still give it the benefit of the doubt hoping it will be consistent later on.
Current Season :4
Link : CBS

Lost follows the lives of plane crash survivors on a mysterious tropical island, after a commercial passenger jet flying between Sydney and Los Angeles crashes somewhere in the South Pacific forcing the group of survivors to work together to stay alive. Their survival is threatened by mysterious entities including polar bears, an unseen creature that roams the jungle, and the island's malevolent inhabitants known as the "Others". It also has the 2nd largest cast in current television shows.
Bottomline : I like this one because of the new concept and certainly a break from all the medical/legal dramas. Also here in each episode they introduce each of the characters, show his/her dark past and how they end up on the island. The second season is a bit tame and feels repeatative, but the action picks up again in season 3. Anyway it will set to conclude in its sixth season
Current Season : 4
Link : ABC

Prison Break
The series revolves around two brothers; Lincoln Burrows who has been sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit, and the other, Michael Scofield a genius, who devises an elaborate plan to help him escape prison.
Bottomline : The first season is brilliant and addictive. But then it goes downhill but picks up in the 4th season. I hope the dont drag this out too long and finish it by the 5th season. You get hooked to this after the first episode itself.
Current Season : 4
Link : FOX

Seinfeld is an situation comedy lasting nine seasons. The show features Jerry Seinfeld, as himself, and a host of Jerry's friends and acquaintances, who include George Costanza, Elaine Benes and Cosmo Kramer.
Bottomline : This is know as the 'show about nothing' and the best sitcom ever. I'll be finishing this show in few weeks and will do a detail review then. But definitely funny.
Current Season : 9 - Show ended
Link : Sony Pictures

The Office
The Office is an Emmy-Award winning American adaptation of the BBC series with the same name and depicts the everyday lives of office employees in the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch of the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. Michael Scott, the head of the Scranton branch of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, feels he is the life of the office; his employees feel otherwise.
Bottomline : This is a different type of sitcom, a mockumetary and wont be liked by all and probably takes some time getting used to. Steve Carell is probably the world's dumbest boss and the pranks Jim pulls on Dwight is hilarious.
Current Season : 5
Link : NBC

Weeds revolves around a widowed housewife (played by Mary-Louise Parker) from an affluent California suburb who becomes her neighborhood's marijuana dealer to make ends meet.
Bottomline : The above poster is reason enough to watch it.
Current Season : 4
Link : Showtime

Chinese Mosquito Bat

No matter how long you stay in Kochi you will never get used to the mosquitoes. I hate using mosquito coils and the electric adapters which uses the liquid repellent doesn't help either. The best investment I made was getting this electric mosquito bat. It is very gratifying to hear the loud snap with a bright spark every time i get one of them. Cost just Rs150 to be a Jedi. No more getting blood on your hands(literally!!)

Ever wondered where your money travels after you spend it?? This site has the potential to do just that. This is an Indian currency tracking site inspired by the US based Where's George? You have to enter the serial number of your rupee note and you get to see where it has been so far. I like the concept, something to do in my spare time. I have registered 171 notes so far.

Batman R.I.P

Tuesday, December 02, 2008 Posted by j0e

Batman R.I.P #676After 70 years of tackling Gotham's worst villains, Batman's alter ego Bruce Wayne is going to die.

For those of you who don't know about Batman(..ignorant fools..), here is a brief introduction:
The Batman is a character of DC Comics created by Bob Kane in 1939. After witnessing his parent's death as a child, wealthy industrialist Wayne trains himself physically and intellectually and dons a bat-themed costume in order to fight crime. His policy of not using guns nor killing his opponents doesn't make it any easier. The vigilante has been protecting the city of Gotham from the likes of super villains like the Joker, the Penguin, Two-Face, the Riddler etc. He is supported by the 'Batman Family' which includes Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin, The Huntress, Oracle and his bulter Alfred. Batman is also part of the Justice League of America.
Batman has spawned various TV and animated series, and a slew of blockbuster films, including this year's The Dark Knight, the second highest-grossing film on record.

Batman R.I.P #676 cover
Scottish writer Grant Morrison revealed earlier this year that Wayne would either retire or be killed. Morrison told there would be "a lot more twists and turns to come" before the story was finally resolved. 'Batman R.I.P' which shows the death of Bruce Wayne concluded in issue #681 of Batman. Batman appears to have died in a fiery helicopter explosion. Front-runners to take over as Batman include Tim Drake, who has been Robin since 1991, and Dick Grayson 'the original Boy Wonder' who now protects Gotham City as Nightwing.

Hardcore fans are upset by the turn of events. Personally, I would like to know how this is going to play out. Maybe it is time for some young blood to don the cowl.

The Dark Knight Returns Movie Poster (Batman 3)

In other Batman related news, The mayor, Hüseyin Kalkan, of a Turkish town called Batman said he will explore legal options to sue Christopher Nolan, director of The Dark Knight and Batman Begins, for using the town's name. "The royalty of the name ‘Batman’ belongs to us,” the mayor told a Turkish news agency. “There is only one Batman in the world. The American producers used the name of our city without informing us.”

Metro coming to Kuwait

Monday, December 01, 2008 Posted by Santo

Kuwait has come up with a new public transport system for the future - A rapid Transit System. After ten years in the planning, the government will finalize its specification for the proposed four-line metro network in the next month. The lines will be tendered as separate projects under a public-private partnership model. Construction will begin in 2009, and is anticipated to take 5-8 years. Around 65% of the network will be elevated with the remainder underground. The total cost is estimated at US$11·3bn.

The new system is said to bring much relief to congested road system and to the ones using public transport. The East-West routes would link the airport and the port, and a North-South line would connect the Iraqi and Saudi Arabian borders. This would eventually form part of the proposed 2000km Gulf rail network linking Iran and the Arabian peninsular.

Media and the 3 sides of the same coin!!

Saturday, November 29, 2008 Posted by Santo

I know its an 8 minute video, but 2 minutes and i promise you will be wiser and still be thinking. Its an IBN interview with Ram Jethmalani, one of India's top defence lawyers during the on going trial of Manu Sharma..See how things turn out. Made me ponder.

So whats your opinion? Don't you think the media takes it too far at times.. Duh!! yes it's their job but is it really their business to impose people with the editors view points. fair or unfair?? Right of Speech yes but am i not entitled to my own opinion. Why should someone who have their own opinion be ostracized that way
I know Manu Sharma was found guilty, rite now he's where he is supposed to be- rotting in jail is what he deserves to be doing. But doesn't everyone deserve the right to be defended. Flashback for people who dont know bout the Jessica Lal case. In 1999, Manu Sharma (high-profile, Bigshot son of a politician) was accused of killing Jessica Lal, a waitress at the Tamarind court, Delhi after she refused to serve drinks past curfew time. He shot Jessica point blank, admist a whole lot of witnesses. In 2006 he was acquitted with the influence of bribe, coercion and influence. But due to media outcry he was hauled back to court and found guilty later that year.

Back to the topic here, the lousy journalist just didnt know when to stop. Dont understand why she had to bring the lawyers family into this. Its like the whole world should be scared of the media, its opinions and influence. I know the guy is guilty but does that make the defence lawyer guilty too. And yes! the media does a wonderful job but tryin to coerce people into their opinion..

Its like there are 3 sides to the defending coin. One-Defending the innocent and framed, Two-Defending the guilty trying to get a lesser sentence and last defending a person whom the whole world knows is guilty by sight and evidence. Should they be really defended? shouldnt they be just thrown in jail and how many more ways are the media influencing us??

I dont know.. I am still thinking and damn it..the coffee table didnt break ;)

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer(2006)

Friday, November 28, 2008 Posted by D$

Perfume : Movie PosterOld movie but I'm sure many out there have missed it. You must be thinking...why is he reviewing such an old movie? Perfume...hmm...looks like a movie where I'm sure to fall asleep five mins after the movie starts. Well that's what i thought when i saw the title but i decided to risk it.

Perfume : Screenshot
This movie is an adaptation of the novel Perfume by Patrick Süskind. It starts off with a guy called Jean-Baptiste Grenouille played by Ben Whishaw who's about to be executed for a crime and i was thinking.."this skinny innocent looking guy?" Then the movie flashbacks to his past and about his strong sense of smell and once i started watching more of it i slowly started to smell myself and things around me! "whoa...wait a min..whats he talking about?" YES this movie really pulls you into the movie and you seriously concentrate trying to smell everything around you. I'm sure you will smell things you've never smelt before, "i guess that's enough for now before things get outta hand"! Through narration it was understood that smell was connected to his emotions.

Perfume : Screenshot

Perfume : Screenshot
Well the story revolves around him trying to make the perfect perfume by preserving the scent of a female who he falls in love with. I highly recommend it to all out there. Two thumbs up for such a unique storyline and if u still dont believe me check out the trailer.

Mumbai under Seige!!!

Mumbai Terror attacks Nov 2008

Terrorists struck at the heart of India's financial capital last nite. Firing and explosions took place at 11 different locations all over Mumbai, over 100 people killed and nearly 250 people injured with numbers still coming in. Hotels and hospitals weren't spared either. People still being holed up in hotels as hostages. Rescue operations are still going on. Situation grim

Mumbai Terror attacks Nov 2008 Locations
Its brutal what people do to impose their ideology over others. I've never supported the B.J.P before (other than the nuclear testing) but i think their POTA (prevention of terrorism act) should be brought back. It might be a little extreme but its time we get tough on these animals- be it any organization or political party with an irrational hardliner ideology. This is the 5th terror attack in India this year. Is the sleeping giant still sleeping? Its time the govt, political parties and people of India rise above the dirty politics and petty differences and stand together.

We just like to say that all of us in Bangalore, Cochin, Kottayam, Kuwait are standing by with Mumbaiites, the ATS and police personnel. Our prayers are with you. I know emotions are running high right now but come soon and Mumbai will be up and running. You can turn the world upside down but you cant kill the spirit of people. Tried and tested. period

JackAss Awards 2008

Wednesday, November 26, 2008 Posted by JoE

Just when you think they couldn't go any lower than they already your face..they've done it again..unbelievable..I'm talking about one of the most..correction..THE most laid back, annoying, mediocre, over-hyped university in the world.. BANGALORE UNIVERSITY!!

This age old institution is nothing but a disorganized, horrible, broken-down, run-of- the-mill establishment which is filled with old farts in the administrative section who keep stuffing their face and can barely move their ass from their chairs.

Why am i furious? I am furious because my friend Miya and I had been there 3 weeks back. We gave our exam on Feb 4th 2008, its been 9 months the whole class has got their marks card but we both still haven't got ours. For crying out loud!! pushing out babies can take 9 months. Does it take 9 months to just print my bloody marks on a crappy recycled piece of paper.. Seriously!!

So during one of our many visits to the university (20 kms from where i stay) we found out that the bloke-head external examiner (also from Bangalore university) who came for our practicals entered our roll numbers wrong. Our college roll number starts with KU and this supposedly genius Dr. Ding-Dong entered it as T (Bangalore university roll nos starts with T) Heavens know what he was fantasizing about while entering our marks? Now, here we both were, so elated we had reached the root of the problem..few more days and all this could be over and i 'll have my hands on my marks card.. WRONG AGAIN!!

These low-lying scumbags just wouldn't budge of their chairs even after acknowledging their fault..they asked us to find Dr. Ding-Dong after running around we found out that he was in China! (dont even ask). The people working there just didn't wanna do any work at all. They expected their colleagues to help and so the vicious circle continued. They kept sending us from one building to another building from one desk to another, the way any govt establishment works around here. You wont believe it- the main guy in charge even asked us to bribe the lousy clerks..ok he dint use the word bribe- he said give them food money and transportation money which i think is as good as i have to pay for every step he takes to the next building..transportation money-my rear-end!! Finally decided to pay, these idiots still didn't wanna work they didn't even want the money. Finally after a tiresome week of running around ourselves we finally got our marks cards only to find these jackass good for nothing printed my marks wrong (talk bout my bad luck!!) Gosh these people can give a bad name to actual morons..I'm dealing with the mother-load of idiots here and the whole process started all over again for me. You know what? From all this I learned that we had to be the idiots wrapped in a moron to be associated with this university. Seriously!! and Yes People I am still in search of my elusive marks card.

And so the Jackass award of 2008 goes to the one and only Bangalore University and no joby ur CUSAT (Cochin University of Screw u And Try again) comes second place. Maybe u should tell us bout ur experience there..Lol

:- I am sorry..but the judges decision is lot of complaints from ppl who think their respective uni's deserve first place.. I have complains from CUSAT (obviously)..M.G university and Madurai Khamaraj.. VTU anyone???

Some guy hit my cars bumper and i told him, 'Be fruitful and multiply'. but not in those exact words- Woody Allen

Quantum Of Solace

Saturday, November 22, 2008 Posted by j0e

Quantum of Solace Movie Poster

Ian Fleming's James Bond is back. But this is not the Bond you know. This Bond is hurt and is itching to do some hurting of his own in this fast paced action packed movie that has none of the elegance, gadgetry no smooth talk that Bond movies stood for. This is more like Bond took classes from Bourne during the summer.

Daniel Craig as Bond once again. Dame Judi Dench reprises the role of M. The story continues immediately from Casino Royale and starts off Bond tears aparts another Aston Martin just to deliver Mr.White to the MI6.
Quantum of Solace Daniel Craig
Bond then sets out to find (and destroy) the ultra secret organization Quantum, defeat Dominic Greene (Chairman of Greene Planet played by Mathieu Amalric) who is helping General Medrano stage a coup d'etat in Bolivia in exchange for a desert land. Bond also has a parkour scene (he must be used to that by now) over the rooftops of Italy. With the CIA out to kill him and MI6 unfriendly, Bond is on the run leaving bodies in his wake and is joined by Camille Montes(Olga Kurylenko) who has a bone to pick with the General.

BottomLine: Brutal and Breathless with ruthless performance by Daniel Craig. But not as good as Casino Royale. I'm giving it three stars because it reminds me how much I miss Bourne (yes, Bourne!)
